How do I find the free educational resources from Open University courses?

The educational materials – called study units – are grouped under different topics such as Arts and History, Business and Management and so on. The list of topics is available on the LearningSpace homepage. Click on the topic that interests you to find a list of the study units which are currently available under that topic; then click through to the study unit you want. You can also use the Search box in the top left hand corner of the site to find what you are looking for.

How long does each LearningSpace unit take to complete?

Units vary in length between 3 and 50 hours – the equivalent of an evening’s through to a week’s work. The unit description gives the amount of time that we estimate that you should spend as a minimum to read the unit, take a full part in the suggested activities and exercises, and devote enough time to think through what it has to say. Find unit descriptions in the topic areas linked to from the LearningSpace homepage. Depending on your circumstances and level of prior study experience and knowledge, you could take longer than the stated time.

Can I contribute my own educational resources to OpenLearn?

Yes.  You can upload your own material to the LabSpace.

The LabSpace is for people who want to reuse our learning materials and create their own versions to share openly with the world. OpenLearn uses a Creative Commons license (Attribution-ShareAlike-NonCommercial) which means you can share, amend and re-use all our materials, so long as it is not for commercial use.

In the LabSpace you can:

  • Access all the content and tools from the LearningSpace as well as archived materials that may be useful but need updating
  • Download the learning materials in several formats and adapt them to suit your needs
  • Upload your versions to share with the LabSpace community.
  • Set up a collaboration zone to work with others in creating materials

Can I translate your materials into different languages?

We welcome translations of our materials. Anyone can amend our materials and upload new versions of the study units into the LabSpace. If you would like to translate our materials and have them appear in the quality assured LearningSpace we require a more formal agreement with you.  Around the world, OpenLearn materials are being translated into a number of languages, including Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese. If you would like to enter into a translation agreement with us please email us at ouwenq [@] open.ac.uk , noting ‘OpenLearnTranslation Agreement’ in the subject box.
