For further advice and support:

BBC Health offers tips and advice on how to look after your mental health. They also offer an extensive list of support organisations.

The Mental Health Foundation is a UK charity that provides information, carries out research, campaigns and works to improve services for anyone affected by mental health problems, whatever their age and wherever they live.

The charity Mind helps people take control of their mental health by providing high-quality information and advice, and campaigning to promote and protect good mental health for everyone.

In Scotland, the mental health charity SAMH works to support people who experience mental health problems, homelessness, addictions and other forms of social exclusion.

For help, support and information on self-harm, the National Self Harm Network offers an established network of support groups and services nationwide.

For young people:

Do you want to talk to someone, but you don't know who? Some people want to talk to a friend but don't know how to start.

You could try sending a sympathetic friend a link to our "tips for mates" page as a first step.

Some other people have preferred to find other people to talk to - here's some suggestions. Would any work for you?

  • Emailing someone - try Young Minds, who've got a collection of resources organised by type of problem in their My Head Hurts section.
