Most of us have a very vague and narrow concept of what autism is, based mainly on such stereotypes as Dustin Hoffman's character in the film Rain Man. In this unit you will discover that there is a wide spectrum of disorders associated with autism, and an equally wide range of approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

This unit offers a review of psychological research and practice aimed at understanding and explaining autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) and helping people who have them. The discussion ranges from problems of identification and diagnosis, through theoretical research into causes, to an evaluation of selected therapeutic approaches. The chapter highlights the diversity of perspectives that exist in this area. It draws on the personal testimony of people with autism and their families, as well as on more formal sources of evidence. It will be of relevance to all those who are interested in autism, whether from an academic, practical or personal perspective. The coverage is necessarily selective: it poses many questions for consideration, but does not claim to offer definitive answers.

We have looked into the query you have raised. Having checked the system you have two accounts with OpenLearn.
As a student with the Open University your Student computer id means that you automatically get an account with OpenLearn – So you can log in using - jh7455 as your username.
However you also have a self registered id, the process for this is registering with OpenLearn using an email address, and that email address is your user name.
We would recommend that you stop using the one of your accounts so that your activity is only recorded on one account. We would suggest that you use your Student Computer Id – jh7455
