Could you manage 24 hours as a social worker? A Day in the Life... provides you with the opportunity to step into a social worker's shoes and to experience a 'typical' day in the office

26 Jan
2012

Are you ready to face a day in and out the office facing some of the challenges that confront social workers? You'll have to manage your time, avoid getting pulled off track - and take part in a case conference and home visit. Need help? You can find out about the job through extracts from the BBC/OU programme Protecting Our Children.

This feature deals with challenging issues and features adult language which some people may find upsetting.

Repeated disconnection - but amazing job

Charlotte Muldoon

Hi,

'Try a day in the life of a social worker' is an extremely interactive way of establishing the demands of being a social worker, but it also shows the contribution you offer not only as social worker but an adviser and mentor to some families.

It would be great to experience more online activities, like this, for various other subjects. This is a very positive exercise and will help all ages from school leavers to career changers find the right route for them.

One change I, and I am sure others would agree, is to improve the software technically as it does disconnect throughout the activity, something which I am yet to finish due to this issue.

I look forward to more exercises before I choose my Open University Degree.

Kind Regards

I have been a social worker for 34 years and a practice teacher for 14 years. I thoguht this was an excellent resource. It should be really helpful for anyone who is thinking of being a social worker. Well done to all those who produced it and helped to compile it. Brilliant. P.S. I am now an OU German student so taking a much needed break from social work!

Downloadable?

Hi

Thanks for the a day in the life of a Social Worker, it's really good.
But, can you make it a downloadable resource that can be used offline?
Not only because I have unreliable internet connection but because I have tried several times to go through the program but I keep losing the flash page when I accidentally press on the OU webpage.

Hi Danielle,
Have you clicked on each of the characters to hear their stories? After you feel you've got to know them, then click on the yellow cross in the top right of the screen; this will give you the chance to confirm that you've met everybody and start the meeting.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply, but I don't get as far as meeting characters or there being a yellow cross, the screen shows feet walking and says 'failure to prepare... prepare to fail' then 1% to 100% counter then freezes. No idea what else I can do
