It’s kind of being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, I suppose, which helps me to stay positive. Everything I’m doing is for a positive goal at the end of it, improving myself. At the end of the day when I perhaps come out of the RAF in 6 years I’ve got a really positive career to go into. There’s also the aspect that I’m fascinated by what I’m learning and enjoy doing it, so that helps me keep positive as well.

Pace yourself

During the week, Hew has to divide his time between his RAF duties and his OU study. He has trained himself to be realistic about the tasks he sets himself during his study sessions. Weekends are his chance to unwind.

"I try and set it out that so that I feel comfortable that I’ve learned a reasonable amount. If I don’t manage three hours but do one-and-a-half hours of really productive work, I call it a night and reflect on what I’ve done.

My weekend’s really the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s my time when I meet up with my friends socially, have a drink, play some golf, have some fun."
