Mentoring, observation and interviews are three important strategies in developing student teachers. This free course, Supporting professional development in Initial Teacher Training, gives a flavour of The Open Universitys flexible PGCE course, and introduces student teacher centred strategies both inside and outside of the classroom, involving mentors, pupils, tutors and others to develop student teachers professional skills and understanding.
After studying this course, you should be able to:
- understand the nature of ‘professionalism’ and ‘being a professional’ in relation to teaching
- understand the importance of effective working relationships with pupils and with colleagues
- understand more about the form or group tutor’s role
- understand the ways in which adults within the wider workforce contribute to successful schools
- understand the different ways in which a teacher-as-tutor can contribute to the corporate life of the school.

Supporting professional development in Initial Teacher Training
The OU PGCE, which is no longer taught by the University, was been developed by The Open University and its partner schools to provide an innovative, student-teacher centred approach to initial teacher education. We aimed to build on the skills, knowledge and experience that student teachers bring to the profession, and then to prepare them for a career in teaching. The course led to the award of PGCE, and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) conferred by the appropriate statutory body. Working with a Partner Schools Network, the OU PGCE provided a rigorous and rewarding course that opened up individual routes into teaching.
