In this unit we will consider how language can be used in different ways for different purposes. To do this we will use the theme of memorial and commemoration. In the first section we briefly discuss the life of the poet Siegfried Sassoon before examining both his poetry and prose. Through this we will see how he conveys meaning in different ways for different audiences using different forms. Following this we discuss more generally how different meanings can be conveyed using prose and poetic language.

Like Annie I left school (more than) 40 years ago. Because I went to a Secondary Modern most of the Teachers' attitude was, "they'll only go down the pit or into a factory so why bother?", but I find these courses brilliant and not that hard to understand, I am very fond of the 1st WW poets so I was particularly interested in the given examples. well done for this and other courses I am studying.

I am about to complete my second level 1 module with the OU as a mature student. I left school at 16 nearly 40 years ago and I have just completed this free online course, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have found it invaluable to fill in the gaps in my academic education which has made study so far, at time, very difficult.
