In this unit you will address the question of traditional music and music from the francophone world and you will examine the place they occupy in the world of artistic creation. The unit is divided into three sections: 'Is traditional music, current music?,' 'The musical heritage of Normandy' and 'Music of the francophone world.'
By the end of this unit, you should have an understanding of:
- the progression in the comparison
- the infinitive as subject of a sentence
- the vocabulary of song
- the tradition of oral culture
- how to write an introduction and a conclusion.

Introduction

This unit concentrates on popular music. Through examples taken from the Norman heritage, rock in Louisiana or slam in Bordeaux, you will enjoy, we hope, the diversity of what is called "musiques actuelles’’. A few favourite themes of the Norman and Breton heritage will be covered in more detail. Finally, we will take you on a mini tour of the francophone musical scene, discovering the work of a few artists whose inspiration draws its sources from three different continents.
This unit is an adapted extract from the Open University course Envol, intermediate French (L211) [Tip: hold Ctrl and click a link to open it in a new tab. (Hide tip)] .
Please note:
Although the introductory text is in English, the main unit itself is entirely in French.
