Re: the symbolism and significance of the number three?
Three is an interesting number. It is the first number to be able to create a third dimension.
If you pick up a four legged table and move it around, even on a very level floor. You will find that the table has to flex, or give. Basically the four legged table has to be made weak. Or one of the four legs will not have the same amount of pressure upon it. One of the legs will come off the floor if it is a sturdy four legged table.
Yet the three legged table or stool, will instantly connect three points of the floor, with the table, no matter the unevenness of the floor, and cause the most stability possible. Even if the table does not give.
Only three legs are able to instantly mesh with the three dimensional surface of the floor. And instantly give you three dimensional stability in the object with three legs. That is why a cameraman's tripod has three legs. Four legs would not work most of the time.
So yes, three is a special number.

William McCormick

not much good if you're used to eating your evening meal in four dimensions
Re: the symbolism and significance of the number three?
Would the forth dimension be the one where the wife keeps nagging at you? I thought that was the Twilight Zone. Ha-ha.
It is funny, but the three legged table although the three legs are, on one plane, or within two dimensions. The legs can intersect a truly three dimensional surface and connect all three of the legs in two dimensions with the floor that is three dimensions in actuality.
The angle of the table may change, relative to the floor, but it will connect any three dimensional surface, to the two dimensional tripod legs. If the size of the surface is compatible with the size of the table.

William McCormick

See what I mean?

If you buy an old fashioned KitKat and eat just one of the fingers how many are you always left with? Co-incidence?
Maybe, but it works either first thing or late at night; every time.

I don't think cholesterol is your biggest worry Dorian.

Just stay out of my loft space dude
Re: the symbolism and significance of the number three?
In order to make an objective assessment of the occurrence of threes, and whether it has greater significance htan other numbers, we would have to make a study of everything, and work out the prevalence of each of them.
My completely unfounded opinion is that the human brain likes finding patterns in things, and three is the smallest number that can form patterns. Two can be a coincidence, but three is a conspiracy...?
Personally, I think 2 is a much more significant number. Many animals are bilaterally symmetrical, and two of most things, you require two organisms to produce genetically different progeny, binary, the simplest known form of information uses two symbols.
Anyone creative enough might manage to make a case for any number. Asian cultures like the number eight (or seven, or six - I forget, it may be all three [hey, there's another three!]), imperial units very much like the number twelve because of its many factors.
Until the study is done - we will just have to ponder!
