BBC
The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was the greatest and bloodiest military operation undertaken by any resistance movement in the Second World War.
There were two uprisings in Warsaw and they are often confused. The first was the largest Jewish uprising of the war. In the spring of 1943 hundreds of Jewish fighters ferociously fought the German army in a desperate attempt to stop the final deportation of the remaining 60,000 Polish Jews from the Warsaw ghetto to the extermination camps.
The second uprising - and the subject of this programme - mobilised thousands of Polish freedom fighters against the Nazis to liberate their capital city in the summer of 1944.
The battle lasted two months and the Germans were soon saying they had seen nothing like it since Stalingrad. But at Stalingrad the Germans had faced a professional army with air support. In Warsaw they were confronted by an underground army – the Armia Krajowa - some 40,000 irregular volunteers led by a handful of professional soldiers, supported by children and civilians. Himmler called it the hardest battle he ever fought. It has also been described as the single largest atrocity of the war. At its end, around 200,000 men, women and children of Warsaw were dead and more than 80% of the city was destroyed.
From the start of the war, the Nazis had plans for Warsaw. These were part of the Generalplan Ost which proposed large scale ethnic cleansing in Eastern Europe – the relocation and extermination of whole populations in the cause of creating living space for the Herrenvolk, the German “master race”. Plans drawn up in 1940 (of which details survive) show that the Polish capital was to be transformed into a new model town for Aryans - “Die Neue Deutsche Stadt Warschau”. This would require the population to be reduced by half, the existing city to be destroyed and rebuilt as model residential district for Germans; with a settlement for a rump Polish labour force across the Vistula River in the eastern suburb. Although, like Nazi reconstruction of Berlin, the New German Warsaw was never built, tragically the Nazis did succeed in destroying the city and slaughtering a vast proportion of its population.
The Poles had resisted from the start. A vast network of clandestine organisations soon sprung up along with an underground army whose activities ranged from sabotage to intelligence (the Polish contribution to allied intelligence gathering was massive). These liaised with the Polish government exiled in London.
In the summer of 1944 the tide of war turned and the Germans were in retreat on all fronts. The Soviet Red Army advanced into Poland and was fast approaching the outskirts of Warsaw. They called on the Poles to rise. The Germans ordered all males in Warsaw between the ages of 16 and 60 to report to build defences. The time seemed ripe for the Poles to act and the Polish underground army command gave the order for the uprising to begin at 17.00 on the first of August 1944.
'Battle for Warsaw' traces the fateful 63 days when, abandoned by their allies, the Poles fought on alone.

Warsaw Uprising -Timewatch programme 28/04/06
Did anyone make a copy or a recording the Warsaw Uprising from the Timewatch programme on 28/04/06?
I did record the programme but unfortunately cannot watch the programme because of a technical fault with the recording.
I am most keen to watch this programme, so if anyone can help, perhaps you would let me know.
Life in Warsaw/Budapest
Would anyone from Warsaw/Budapest be willing to tell me about lifestyle/culture and identity for my OU dissertation, please?

The attempt to airlift arms and other supplies to the Poles in Warsaw is described in the book "Airlift To Warsaw" by Neil Orpen. The aircraft used by the British were based in southern Italy, and flown by RAF, SAAF and Polish squadrons. The round trip to Warsaw was over 1500 miles, almost entirely over enemy-held territory where the aircraft could be attacked by German fighters. Once over the city, the loads had to be dropped from about 600 ft, making the aircraft very vulnerable to fire from the ground. The long distance involved meant that the aircraft were very low on fuel when they landed back in Italy.Between the 8th August and the 22nd September 1944, 186 sorties were attempted from Italy. 63 failed outright, and only 92 were considered to be successful. 31 aircraft failed to return with the loss of over 200 aircrew. In his book, Neil Orpen says " No other major air operation during World War II, and certainly none in which no bombs were dropped, could compare with this incredible effort. The crews represented a new breed of good Samaritans who risked their lives to help allies whom they had never seen."

Re: Warsaw Uprising -Timewatch programme 28/04/06
Apologies,
I hit the send button before adding an edited point to the question about another screening of the Timewatch - Battle for Warsaw. We do not have any information on any plans to screen the programme on any other channel at this point in time, or in the near future. It would be a case of keeping your eye out in the listings magazines to see if it comes up in the future.

Re: Warsaw Uprising -Timewatch programme 28/04/06
My chief reaction to the programme was that it showed yet again what a rotten deal Poland has had through the centuries - a permanent football to the big powers. It was divided three times during the late 18th Century alone. We went to war in September 1939 to protect Poland and yet we sold them down the river to the Russians. Everybody who fought with them claims that the Poles during WW2 were some of the bravest people around. Yet we handed them over without hardly a whimper to the tender mercies of the Russians. Polish foreign policy during the 1930s can be criticised but nothing could justify the west's lack of any kind of support. Let's hope that Poland will now survive and prosper. The bravery of the Warsaw Ghetto deserves a permanent and happy ending. Best wishes, John
Re: Warsaw Uprising -Timewatch programme 28/04/06
John, You are correct in saying that the Poles fought with distinction, from the initial German invasion, they lasted far longer than is generally thought, far longer in fact than France, they did not roll over, ever give up,or welcome The Germans unlike at least 50%, if not more, of France. I think it is safe to say that without the Polish pilots that managed to get to England the Battle of Britain would have been lost. RAF tactics were questionable and the Poles with combat experience showed them the way. In the period before the arrival of the US Airforce the Poles were responsible for the highest kill rates. They flew with determination to stop and kill the enemy to protect the UK from the German threat so that they could then after the war return to Poland, a country often smirked and laughed at for it's wartime history but very misunderstood, thanks mainly to Russian and American and to some extent British propaganda put about before the end of the war so that Roosevelt could give Poland to Stalin, something that made Churchill squirm but was almost helpless to stop but he was not free of blame. Please find a copy of 'For Your Freedom And Ours' If you haven't already, it is a revelation! A common misconception is that the Warsaw Ghetto and the Warsaw Rising are one in the same, they are not. This was also post war Stalin propaganda. I could go on but instead recommend 'Rising 44' The battle for Warsaw by Norman Davies.
Unfortunately I was abroad and did not see the Timewatch program, does anyone know if I can download it?
Re: Warsaw Uprising -Timewatch programme 28/04/06
My father, who was a regular army officer, claimed that the Poles were some of the bravest soldiers that he ever saw. He felt lasting shame at the efforts of the west over Poland's future and would have rejoiced to see Poland at last free. Best wishes, John
Re: Warsaw Uprising -Timewatch programme 28/04/06
P.S. As many people got mixed with the actual events I would like to tell you, there were two uprisings during the WWII in Warsaw. First, uprisnig in the Ghetto(april 1943), carried out by left-overs of Polish Jews. Second uprising 01.08.1944 involved Polish undergrand army(AK), scale of it was much more bigger than the first one, and this is the one we could watch the documentry about, on BBC Timewatch recently.
Re: Warsaw Uprising -Timewatch programme 28/04/06
Hi John, it's nice to see that some people from England (which I assume you are)do know something about Poland's history/martyrology. As a young Pole I'm full of worries of Polands future. We joined EU and NATO, so for now we are safe and should become prosperous in a matter of time. But things like EU can fall apart rapidly as history proves. Me and hundred of thousands Poles have to migrate to get a work to do not live in debasement that our instable goverments has to offer. Poles (older generations) has been destroyed mentaly by the communism they lived in. To understand how big that illness is you would need to experience this reality yourself. Communism was the worst thing that happenned to Polish people. The same old politicians keep power either by being elected or holding key companies bigest shares. They were allways loyal to Russians so they are traitors in my eyes.Poles where and are to poor to buy companies that were privatised so most of them were sold to foreign capital, similar thing with lands and best properties. Putin don't like as, Germans make a deal with them over our heads. There is so many topics I would talk about... On the end I have to say that I`m a patriot and really hope and wish that one day I will be able to go back and live in independent Poland, but it's propably that Polish utopian romanticism in me ,-fighting for the case that's lost already, I hope- not. Anyway, thanks for your interest. Regards

Hello,
I videorecorded this programme and it has come out ok.
I am happy to copy it for anyone who missed it but it might take a few days.
Jeffrey Davis
Thanks for your helpful offer to pass on the Timewatch programme 'Battle for Warsaw', to one of our other forum contributors, who missed the broadcast. I know I'm going to sound like I'm spoiling the party, as I'm a great history enthusiast myself, but we're unable to permit this on two counts. We're unable firstly to post any personal email addresses onto the forum and secondly, I'm afraid that while it's great to tape programmes from the TV for later viewing for personal use, it's an infringement of copyright to pass on broadcast material to others in this way. Thanks for your response to other forum users though, it was I appreciate, offered with the very best of intentions.

My wifes mother was in the uprising and this would be a great gift for her.

If this is OK please reply and we can arrange the details.

Thanks - your observation.
However, reference arton this subject- it appears the moderator may be suggesting copies may become available or have I misread the art item.
Perhaps you would let me have your opinion.
I will of course get any information to you if I manage to get a copy.
John.
I'm sorry but I think there has been a slight misunderstanding with regards copies of the Timewatch programme 'Battle for Warsaw'. I'm afraid that there are not copies available of this programme and at present there are no plans to repeat this programme.

Warsaw Uprising Time Watch Programme 28/04/06
Would it be possible to re-run the debate and the excellent program on the Katyn Forest massacre of 1940/1941
Warsaw Uprising Time Watch Programme 28/04/06
I'd like to know how the 1944 uprising fits in with the Warsaw Jewish Ghetto uprising that I believe predates this.
My understanding was that the Jewish Ghetto rose up against the Nazis as they were clearing the Ghetto and that it lasted for several weeks. The Jewish fighters asked for assistance from the Polish restistance and were refused. Is this right?
Perhaps an OU historian can shed some light on this please.
Re: Warsaw Uprising Time Watch Programme 28/04/06
Hello,
The Ghetto uprising took place in april 1943, as a last stand of defiance by Jewish fighters, who opted to die fighting (with a slim chance of survival) rather than being led to their deaths passively. Help was asked in the form of weapons. The Polish resistance gave some weapons, and initiated some diversionary actions, but generally wasn't very forthcoming with help. In their defence it has to be said that the AK (Polish Home Army) was already preparing for the larger Warsaw uprising in 1944, and didn't want to give expend too much valuable weapons or men for an essentially suicidal mission. A few hundred Jewish fighters managed to escape the carnage and would fight later alongside the AK during the Warsaw uprising.
Re: Warsaw Uprising Time Watch Programme 28/04/06
Patryk,
Thank you for that. At least I know my slim knowledge of these events are fairly accurate.
Battle for Warsaw
Hi, why my post has not been posted???

I will be directing the team to this issue of forum users requesting copies of the programme. Your posting has been delayed until the team have been advised (which will be on Tuesday).
Battle for Warsaw
Congratulations on tonight's programme. Squeezing all that complexity and emotion into 50 minutes was a feat and deserves much wider dissemination. My interest stems in part from the fact that my mother is one of the surviving fighters and is living in London. She is depicted on one of the stills in the film.
Would it be possible to provide her with a copy of the film? She has much to comment on and to fill in. Could someone get in touch about this?
Re: Battle for Warsaw
If you are able to locate a copy please let me know.
I will let you know if I am able to get a copy.
I did copy it but when I was setting it up to record it from my recorder,I mistakenly hit the wrong button and wiped the recording - so I was unable to watch the recording.
