1.1 People and places
In this section you have a first look at places and people in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You familiarise yourself with the pronunciation of place names in German, and you talk about the location of cities and towns in German-speaking countries. You also talk about where some people come from (some well-known and some not so well-known).
1 Here is a map showing places in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. To start with, listen to the audio extract . Can you understand where the various people are from? Make a note of the place names you hear.

2 Which of the places have you heard of before (or have even visited)? Make a note of them. Do you know any other places in Germany, Austria and Switzerland? Where are they?

2The answer depends on your own experiences. The aim of this activity is to make you think about what you know already, and encourage you to have a look at a map to find out more about the location of places you have heard of.
