Week 6: Human rights

Introduction

In this week you explore what human rights are and how these are protected in law. Human rights are widely talked about, discussed and reported on. There is not room in one week to cover fully what is often a controversial topic, so this week will concentrate on the basics.

  • What are human rights?
  • Why did they emerge?
  • What is their relevance in Scotland today?

As part of the discussion you will also explore common myths surrounding human rights.

After studying this week you should:

  • have an understanding of what human rights are
  • be able to explain the framework for human rights in Scotland
  • understand the complexity surrounding human rights and common myths about them.
