Sir Charles Geoffrey Vickers had a distinguished career in the military - winning the Victoria Cross in the First World War and serving on the Joint Chiefs Of Staff during the Second.

He was instrumental in creating the field of systems thinking, introducing the concept of 'appreciative systems'.

Sir Geoffrey died in 1982; in 2004, a collection of his papers were donated to The Open University.
