Biography

After many years as a seniorlecturer in Spanish in the Schoolof Languages and Applied Linguistics at the Open University, Tita is now Director of Innovation and e-learning for an education company. She also runs the website www.yourlanguagecentre.com, where she offers free courses and resources for adult language learners. After working as an EFL teacher in Italy, an Associate lecturer for the Arts Faculty at the Open University, and a leacturer in Spanish at De Montfort university, Titajoined the Department of Languages at the OU in 1997. There, she worked on the development of the OU Spanish courses, writing and coordinating a number of OU Spanish course books and other teaching materials, including AV and e-learning resources. Tita also worked on the development of the Italian beginner's course, and the interdisciplinary course L161, Exploring Languages and Cultures, and the MA in Translation. She was the academic responsible for setting up the Spanish Programme on Futurelearn (https://www.futurelearn.com/programs/spanish-for-beginners) which has had more than 500,000 enrollments. She was the lead academic on the BBC World series, The Superlinguists (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3csz4pt) and on the OpenLearn course How to learn a language (https://www.open.edu/openlearn/languages/how-learn-language/content-section-overview?active-tab=description-tab) Her research is in the area of Open Education, in particular, Open Educational Resources and Open Educational Practices. She is also interested inthe area of intercultural communication andthedevelopment of intercultural competence, especially in distance education and through web-based materials. She has been in charge ofa number of external projects, includingOT12, an Open Translation MOOC funded by the HEA, andPerforming Languages, a European project investigating the intersection between drama performance, language teaching and intercultural communication. Shewas also project director forLORO,an OER repository for language teaching materials, a project lead by her colleague Anna Comas-Quinn.
