Peter Carrington entered the House Of Lords in 1940, taking the Conservative whip. He served as a minister under Macmillan, Douglas-Home, Heath and Thatcher, resigning in 1982 after failing to forsee the invasion of the Falkland Islands. He was secretary-general of NATO in the 1980s, and during the late 1990s, he chaired the Bilderberg Conferences. He was given a second title, Baron Carington of Upton, in order to allow him to remain in the House Of Lords after the removal of automatic privileges for Hereditary Peers.
