Professional biography
Susan has been an Open University tutor at both undergraduate and postgraduate for over twenty years and teaches across faculties. She has authored module materials and been commended for her student centred teaching. She is a seasoned researcher conducting investigations on a wide range oftopics particularly in low resource settings. Her recent research interests include theUN Sustainable Development Goalsand higher education delivery in Ethiopia She is currently supporting a DfID funded project building the capacity offaculty in Myanmar, with a particular focus on distance education. She works extensively with international development organisations such as Oxfam, Save the Children and the Humanitarian Leadership Academy to deliver their trainings. Susan is also an academic project manager and recently managed the design, authoring and delivery of two Masters’ programmes for health managers in Ethiopia which was funded by USAID. Susan holds a PhD in International relations from the London School of Economics where she specialised in African development, and since 2004 has been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is also the recipient of threeOpen University teaching awards, in 2010,2012 and 2020. Susan Fawssett has been a central academic at the OU, but now works as an associate lecturer and consultant. She has written units for many OU modules, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and across faculties. She has also produced learning materials for external organisations such as the BBC, Oxfam and Save the Children. Susan did her doctorate at the London School of Economics in International Relations undertaking fieldwork in Tanzania, and regularly visits Kenya and Uganda to teach. She has been awarded threeOU Teaching Awards in 2009,2011 and 2020 for her outstanding contribution to student learning and consistently excellent teaching.
