What makes a great school? Oxley Park

Updated Wednesday 24th August 2011

Success in attracting pupils to Oxley Park has meant design challenges to fit enough classrooms - but pupils are still enthusiastic about their school.

Oxley Park is a two-storey building, giving pupils a physical ascent as they rise through the school.

What makes a great school? Oxley Park

Ciara
When I first got here it was kind of like a high school because it has two storeys and stairs and lifts and everything.

Harrison
I think it’s a really great school.  The buildings are great, got good classrooms.

Oli
Because they’re very big.  They’re very light, and they’re very colourful as well.

Cassie
I like the size of it and I like how the tables are set out.  I like having the interruptive whiteboard.

Ciara
You have heating in the floor (laughs) which makes it better in the winter, and the classrooms are very spacious.

Harrison
You really have enough space to work in.  You’re never really cramped.

Ciara
What I especially like is the little areas outside most of the classrooms called the quiet areas, where people can have extra lessons and like people can have a little time out.

Harrison
When I was in Year 4 and 5 we used those quite a lot.  I used to go do like a bit of extra maths in there, and it was really good because you can like get really comfortable in there.

Cassie
It’s more quieter because there are more people in the classroom than in the shared area.

Ciara
They decorate it different for their topic.  I think that’s good because it’s not always the same thing, it’s always different, and like you’ll come past and say ooh, it’s like this this year.

Oli
So yeah, the school is quite of a circle a little bit, like a semicircle.

Harrison
It’s a weird shape for a school to have it like that, but yeah, it’s pretty cool.

Oli
I’ve walked down the corridor and I can’t really see my way round, because when I’m at the classroom and walking around I can’t see the hall.

Ciara
I used to go to another school.  They were just a one storey school.  The school that was on one level of course had to be really long.  But this school is still quite long, but if I was going from one side to the other side of the building I’d have to walk through all of it.  But on this school, it’s put into two storeys so that it’s more together so that you don’t have to go a really long way to get to everything, which is so much easier.

Oli
My classroom’s downstairs, but I will have to go up the stairs next year because my classroom will be upstairs.  My mummy and daddy don’t come up with me.  They have to stay down there and I have to kiss them goodbye downstairs.

Ciara
It’s not really scary, it’s kind of just a new experience to get to use the stairs to go up to your classroom, and your classroom being separate from the downstairs.

Harrison
The balcony’s really good because you go out there in the mornings to do the haka.  It’s like a morning thing that we do to sort of wake us up.  It’s like a sort of a rugby haka except without the huh!

Cassie
Sometimes it’s a little treat for us to go out the balcony.  You get a good view of the playground.

Oli
Because when I’m down the bottom it looks quite tall and when I’m on the balcony it’s massive.  Because I like going down the balcony to get to the playground and going home, because it’s fun doing that.

Ciara
It is much easier to get down to the playground then because they have stairs outside.  Because if it didn’t have a balcony then we’d have to go through the school and out underneath, and that would take a long time, and it would be a load of children all coming down the stairs, and it would get a bit noisy and stuff.

Oli
I love the trim trail because it’s got lots of equipment on it and the best thing I like is the rolly pin.

Cassie
I would like to have some more things to play with in the playground.  We used to have that stuff but now we don’t because the Year 6 building was going to be in the place where you play.

Ciara
We have the Year 6 building which is separate from the rest of the building, and we had that built through the last summer holidays because when we’ve got too many children coming up there’s no room.

Harrison
Last year, I think it was, we got rid our music room to make space for another classroom because we had too many kids come into the school and we need more space, so we had to build a new classroom by getting rid of the music room.  So I think that bringing back the music room would be good.

The best thing about being here, just being here in the first place, it’s a really a great school.

Ciara
Oxley Primary is great because there’s everything you need in a building.
