Small Data: 21st Century station openings

Updated Thursday 17th April 2014

There have been over seventy rail and light rail stations opened in the UK since the start of the century. Small Data gathers them in one place.

There's been a lot of activity on Britain's railway since the dawn of the 21st Century, and yet trying to get a sense of the scale of the projects isn't easy.

To this end, we've gathered a dataset which attempts to list the stations added to the network since January 1st, 2001, with a sense of the cost of the projects involved and how well-used these facilities are.

Liverpool South Parkway station Creative commons image Icon Ian Roberts under CC-BY-SA licence under Creative-Commons license Liverpool South Parkway Station What this list doesn't include is stations which have reopened as part of a heritage railway project. You'll also see it doesn't contain any details about passenger numbers for Tyne & Wear Metro or Manchester Metrolink stations - these don't appear to be publicly available.

Passenger numbers for Network Rail stations use a common methodology, and is based on numbers of journeys which start and end at that station; numbers for Dockland Light Railway are counted by a different methodology and are not directly comparable.

Cost figures should be approached with caution, as they drawn from a number of sources including official statements at start of project; newspaper commentary after the end of the project and everything in between; some figures refer just to the station itself while others cover a number of transport-related projects of which the station is a small part. None of the figures have been adjusted for inflation. They do, however, give a sense of the size of endeavour undertaken.
