Write out your own solution to the following problem.

As I was going to St Ives

I met a man with seven wives.

Each wife had seven sacks.

Each sack had seven cats.

Each cat had seven kits.

Kits, cats, sacks and wives

How many were going to St Ives?

(a) Write down the people I met. [2]
(b) Find the number of wives, sacks, cats and kits. [4]
(c) Show that the number of kits is 74. [4]
(d) What is the answer to the riddle? [2]
