Man, walks into the doctors, says (CROAKY VOICE) 'I need something for my throat! I absolutely need something for my throat! I sing in the night, it pays me wages. I work on the phones in the day. I can't live with my voice like this. I need something done about it!'
The doctor says 'Get your clothes off. Strip down in front of me. Turn on your side please. I see what the problem is. Your willy, it's far too big. You're quite a small man. It's far too big. It's not that uncommon though, something can be done for it'.
The man say (CROAKY VOICE) 'Oh fantastic, great, thank you doctor'
The Doctor says 'Yes, we can exchange it with a smaller penis and your voice should get better'
The man says (CROAKY VOICE) 'That's absolutely fine. I need my voice back for my job. I need to work to earn money to feed my children'
So they go and the man has the operation done. He comes in a week later and says (NORMAL VOICE) 'Doctor, how can I ever thank you? My singing career's picked up, I've been found by a scout. I'm working loads. My life's back on track. How can I ever thank you?'
And the doctor says (CROAKY VOICE) 'Don't worry son, you've done enough!'

This is a 'willy joke' that is told by a young Liverpudlian man. It's a very good dramatic performance. Phil offers an excellent impersonation of the man with the croaky voice and the doctor who end up exchanging voices and willies.
Men tell lots of 'willy jokes' in our survey. These are mainly jokes about penis size. Penis jokes are common in male culture. They pervade the playground, shower rooms and pubs, emphasising the symbolic importance of the male member.
But while there is a lot of joking about 'willies' in popular culture, the penis itself is a visual taboo in mainstream popular culture. Psychoanalytical approaches suggest that penis jokes articulate male anxieties about sexuality, potency and power. But sociologists tend to dismiss such theories – as just that: theories!
Feminist perspectives stress the relative lack of jokes about female sexual organs and argue that this expresses the centrality of the penis as a symbol of male power in our society. Clearly, the ambivalent status of the penis as both symbollically powerful but yet possibly impotent but culturally prominent opens up endless possibilities for humour.
