Am I Normal? – An inaugural lecture by Professor Blaine Price

Updated Tuesday 10th October 2017

Join us at the Berrill Theatre and online on Tuesday 28 November 2017, 6–7pm for the inaugural lecture by Professor Blaine Price: Am I Normal?

We are delighted to invite you to Professor Blaine Price’s inaugural lecture, Am I Normal? In which he will consider the risks and benefits of novel health technologies that automatically gather data about you and your lifestyle.

Date: Tuesday 28 November

Time: 6:00pm–7:00pm

Venue: The Open University, the Berrill Theatre

Blaine Price is Professor of Computing in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at The Open University (OU). His research interests focus on improving people’s engagement with data gathered from mobile, wearable and so-called ‘ubiquitous computing’ technologies that increasingly form part of our lives. These include developing technologies and policies to protect the privacy rights of individuals and groups; as well as finding ways to improve people’s lives through new medical practices and allowing individuals to live longer, healthier lives in their own homes.

Blaine launched and continues to lead, the OU’s postgraduate Digital Forensics teaching programme. He also supervises PhD students in the areas of privacy, ubiquitous and wearable computing emphasising medical and health applications of these technologies.

In Am I Normal? Blaine will consider the benefits of collecting data about yourself and demonstrate devices that can measure and monitor individual health histories. He will also discuss some of his current projects which explore how relatively simple and inexpensive technologies may improve surgical outcomes as well as reducing the time older patients need to stay in hospital.
