1 Advice on managing online risks in schools

This publication from Becta is an excellent introduction to the importance of e-safety in schools. This will help you understand the importance of this subject within the wider safeguarding in schools framework, the importance that Ofsted places on this aspect of safety and the range of risks we should be guarding against. [Please note that at the time of writing, the Government’s cut back in public services has resulted in Becta ceasing operating. It is therefore important that if you access any of the resources available for schools to use that you download the documents electronically. Becta and Crown copyright allow materials to be used as long as (a) they are not used for financial gain and (b) the source is acknowledged]

The publication outlines a very helpful classification of the range of risks relating to children as regards online content, contact and conduct. It is important to recognise that children can be a recipient of harm and also a participant in harm as actors. The table shows the types of risks including commercial, aggressive and sexual, and also the risks of children being influenced by inappropriate values such as biased, racist or misleading advice.
