The role of parents in supporting children online is crucial especially at KS1, when there are opportunities for schools to have closer contact and communication with parents.

These three resources will help you see how important it is to engage parents with e-safety, especially for young children in KS1. The quiz is designed by Becta for parents but gives a good overview of the range of issues and challenges such as privacy, supervision, education and trust – all issues you will explore in this subject.

Another excellent resource for parents, Know IT All for Parents, produced by Childnet International, is a really comprehensive set of videos for parents and carers and is translated into many different languages. It is available free on this website and for schools to order on CD-ROM.

Finally the ‘Where’s Klaus?’ video from You Tube uses humour to get an important point home to parents. It helps illustrate the range of risks children face when they use the internet unsupervised.

Reflection

As you develop your project think about the opportunities to engage with parents in school and how you can help them see their role in keeping children safe online.

Might an e-safety quiz be a useful project to develop with young learners? You could design it so that the children could quiz their parents.
