7 Networks and effective action: individuals and society

7.1 Active citizenship

Active citizenship is the philosophy that citizens should work towards improving their community through economic participation, public service, voluntary work and similar activities. To be an active citizen involved in climate change mitigation and/or adaptation, a number of 'tools' are required. These might include opportunities for volunteers, sources of information, training (formal or informal), effective networks and other essential resources such as time. Active citizenship is often promoted directly towards young people, such as through schools but the tools are relevant to all. There are many educational programmes promoting active citizenship, with the underlying process involving development from a member of society who is unconcerned about their role to a genuinely active participant through education, practice and reflection.
