Drawing by Gulliver of the machine he saw at his visit to the Grand Academy of Lagado (Swift, 1726). The figure shows a square divided into a grid of 16 by 16. Each cell is occupied by a symbol that looks like a Chinese or Arabic character. On the edges of the square there are handles, eight on each side.
