EMILY:
I’m Emily, a newly qualified teacher and I’m teaching in a Year 1 class in a primary school in the Southeast of England. It’s a two-form entry school located in a fairly affluent community. It’s a great job in a lovely school, and I’m so grateful to be part of such a supportive team. But, when I was at Uni doing my BEd, I was really inspired by work we did on reading for pleasure, and I am keen to implement Reading for Pleasure pedagogies in the classroom. I want the children to be able to choose books from a large selection in the Year 1 library area, however, the current Year 1 library area only contains colour banded decodable texts. I’m worried that if I change the system, children might not know what to select, they might only select favourite picture books and might not access texts that enhance their decoding skills.
