SPEAKER 1
Karen and Nicola, thank you for joining me today to talk about your health promotion work here in the setting. And it was absolutely invaluable having you agree to use the toolkit and do the five steps. So I'm really interested in knowing what your thoughts are now. It's been a couple of years since we did the research. So I'm going to ask you some questions. And the first one is, what motivated you to take part in the research, please?
SPEAKER 2
I think we've always had a commitment, haven't we? To healthy eating and--
SPEAKER 3
Investing in children's health and wellbeing, promoting healthy eating, healthy lifestyles for the children in our care.
SPEAKER 2
Yeah. And then the government introduced the obesity plan. So that sort of spearheaded it a little bit more--
SPEAKER 3
Yeah, the aim to reduce obesity levels for young children. I think 1 in 5 children at the moment attending school, going into schools, who are obese. So it just promoted us-- well, instigated us to do a bit more for the children and families that we have here in the nursery.
SPEAKER 2
And I think it also gives you that there's legislation then as well that you need to follow. So it's something that you've got to do as well, isn't it? That which helps them with staff and parents to be able to say that to them.
SPEAKER 3
We had two members of staff that had already completed training. It was more important for us to help children make better choices, and to introduce them to living healthier lifestyles.
SPEAKER 2
We are in an area of deprivation as well, aren't we? So that comes into it as well. And it's being able to make those choices, but being able to afford that as well. So we had to look at that, didn't we?
SPEAKER 3
Yeah. So staff sharing their knowledge with the children and the families, and just being good role models. I think that's-- and that's why we really wanted to take part in the project. It linked with everything that we've already been doing in the nursery.
SPEAKER 1
Yeah.
