This diagram is in two parts. Part (a) is a flat map of the world with red dots – each red dot represents the same number of people. On this map the red dots are concentrated in Europe, India, Japan and China, with an even sparse spread across North America, mostly the coastal areas of South America, mainland Africa and the North African coast (bare across the Sahara desert) and Madagascar, coastal areas of Australia and Indonesia and western Russia. Part (b) is a map of the world that shows world rainfall. This shows exclusively snow above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle. Infrequent rain is shown for the Atacama Desert in mainland southern South America, the Great Western Desert in thesouth western portion of North America, the Sahara Desert across the entire of North Africa, the Kalahari Desert in the south western part of Africa, the Arabian Desert in the Middle East, the Australian Desert which comprises most of mainland Australia, and the Thar and Gobi deserts across central Asia. Light seasonal rain is shown across the northern portion of North America, north west and central South America, central southern Africa, south east Australia, Spain and most of central and eastern Europe and most of Asia. Heavy seasonal rain is shown in Florida, Mexico, central north and central eastern South America, the north coast of Africa and large parts of central and southern Africa, India, south and east China, Japan and northern Australia. Moderate rain every month is shown along the north west and south east coasts of North America, the Caribbean, central eastern and southern tip of South America, western Europe, the south eastern tip of India, New Zealand and the south eastern coast of Australia. Lastly, heavy rain every month is shown for the north western coast and central north and north eastern coast of South America, equatorial Africa and Indonesia.
