The importance of diverting children from any criminal justice process that permanently labels them as criminals is a recurring theme of this course. This is because there is a strong evidence base suggesting that raising the age of criminal responsibility is one of the most effective ways of achieving this diversion. Across and between the four jurisdictions of the UK there is growing recognition of this evidence, and the costs to children, young people and wider society, of ignoring it.
