1.7 欧洲的助教

助教和其他相关的学习支持员工在为英国驻扎在海外的军队的孩子开立的学校、在其它欧洲国家和美国、加拿大以及澳大利亚等国的学校中也存在。国家教师联盟(1998年)曾做过一项调查,特别讲述了欧洲学校里的一些有意思的辅助工作。当我们梳理英国助教角色发展的时候,可以参考欧洲的情况。正如社会学家艾买提厄特在欧尼(1969年,第6页)所相信的,有比较才能拓宽我们的“认知范围”。国家教师联盟发现了下面这些发生在荷兰、法国和比利时的辅助实例。

荷兰和英国一样,小学里的助教有着较长历史,通常是在幕后为年幼的孩子们和老师提供帮助。他们现在扮演的角色和英格兰专业助教类似,都是直接帮助孩子学习,特别是阅读和基本技能。

在法国有“学监”(正常情况下在18到26岁之间),他们通常是打算做老师的。从传统意义上讲,他们负责看管校园里和教室外的小学生,他们也和家长联系,履行监管职能。最近,他们也开始负责在课堂里为孩子的学习提供支持了。他们还承担起了与信息技术相关的工作,诸如设备维护和学习辅导。还有些助教主要承担教学任务,提供学习支持和辅导课外活动。

在比利时,有一些拿补贴的合同工,他们是在某些项目下为了降低就业率而被录用的。他们在上课前照看孩子或是帮助孩子们学习一门外语。
