5 Becoming an effective team member

The purpose of this assessment course is for you to create a portfolio of your work to represent you as an effective team member within your study or work activities. This will involve using criteria to help you select examples of your work that clearly show you can use and improve your skills in working with others. However, by far the most important aim is that you can use this assessment process to support your learning and improve your performance in working with others.

Very few people study or work in complete isolation. Some courses set projects and assignments that need to be completed in pairs or groups, either face-to-face or using econferencing. Most jobs require you to work as part of a team, and employers are keen for individuals to demonstrate capabilities in working with others.

Working in a group is not just about getting a job done. It is about communicating effectively, contributing ideas and listening to those of others, making sure that others feel comfortable, giving and receiving feedback, keeping the level of interest and excitement going, and leading and following the lead as appropriate. In working on the assessment course you will be providing evidence of skills as a team member and team leader to achieve the required standard of work.

It is important to plan ahead for the assessment work and carefully consider what you need to present as evidence. The work you include for assessment needs to present a ‘storyboard’ of your learning journey showing selected pieces of evidence that provide opportunities for you to work in one-to-one and group situations and take a leading role in managing at least one activity. You need to take time to practise and apply your skills over a period of time. Allow at least three months to improve, use your skills and put together your portfolio.
