DNA is the genetic material found in most living organisms, including humans. The pattern and arrangement of nucleotide bases in DNA are unique to each individual and are preserved in the chromosomes, which can be passed on to the organism’s offspring. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, totalling 46. Each person inherits 23 chromosomes from each parent, which means that some unique characteristics can be shared between parents and offspring. DNA is therefore unique in identifying individuals and family lineage.
