The drawings in the figure summarise the three modes of direct person-to-person transmission of infection: (a) sexually transmitted infections can be transferred between individuals by unprotected sex; and contagious infections can be transferred by touch as well as sexual contact; (b) infections can be transmitted from mother to child both during labour and birth and also by breast-feeding.
