The GROW model – which stands for Goal, Reality, Options and What will you do next – was developed by Sir John Whitmore (2002) and is possibly the best known model for coaching. The particular value of GROW is that it provides a simple, structured approach which helps set goals effectively as well as serving as a problem-solving process. The simplicity of GROW means this is a very useful tool for beginners at coaching; however, this straightforward nature belies the complexity involved in coaching in a skilful way. Starr (2008) suggests there are four key skills to being an effective coach:
It is important to keep a focus on these four skills as you work with the GROW tool. If you are using it when coaching someone, make sure you always build rapport, listen carefully and provide supportive feedback.
