CHRISTINA MASLACH:
We tend to only focus on individuals who are having this experience. And by framing it that way, then say, what is wrong with the individual? How can we help the individual? How do we measure what's going on with the individual?
And we are missing the bigger picture, and in some sense, the more important aspect, which is where is that individual working along with other people? And what is happening there that is causing this experience? It's not something being generated simply internally.
It is a stress response to stressors in the work environment. And so part of meeting the challenge is to change this either/or framework of is it the person or is it the situation, and say, it's both. And we have to look at both and really figure out how to make a much better balance or fit between people and their environment so that they can thrive and were successful.
