Long description
Figure 6 Map showing early asylums in Scotland and population densities of counties. This map shows the location of public, pauper, district and ‘idiot’ asylums built before 1880, and Kennoway, Scotland's most famous village centre for the boarding-out of lunatics. The map reveals the difficulty of relating asylum-building to industrialisation and urbanisation. While the concentration of asylums around Scotland's populous central belt is quite clear, a significant number of institutions were located in thinly populated areas
