This example comprises seven bars of music in the treble and bass clefs. There is an instruction in each bar. Bar 1 contains two notes and the other bars contain a single note each. Bar 1 contains the instruction ‘octave ascending’; there is a note on the second lowest line of the bass staff followed by a note in the space above the highest line of the bass staff. Bar 2 contains the instruction ‘semitone ascending’; there is a note in the second lowest space of the treble staff. Bar 3 contains the instruction ‘semitone descending’; there is a note with a flat symbol beside it on the second lowest line of the treble staff. Bar 4 contains the instruction ‘tone ascending’; there is a note on the middle line of the bass staff. Bar 5 contains the instruction ‘tone descending’; there is a note with a sharp sign next to it in the second highest space of the treble staff. Bar 6 contains the instruction ‘octave descending’; there is a note with a sharp sign next to it in the highest space of the bass staff. Bar 7 contains the instruction ‘semitone ascending’; there is a note with a sharp sign next to it on the highest line of the bass staff.
