ANNIE POWELL:
My top tips for educators considering doing RETOPEA is, yes, I would do it. Definitely, go for it. Really, you can't do it unless you've got really good support from your senior management because the senior management can help you to make things happen.
I think it's thinking about the timing and how you structure each session, running the actual ENGAGE session would be quite straightforward, particularly for someone who's used to teaching history or RE.
Getting lots of people on board. So we had lots of goodwill. We had students coming to help. We had other teachers coming in to help. And all of them enjoyed it, felt they were doing something positive. And obviously, thinking about maybe the ethos and the ideas within your own school. Make it relatable to the things which are important themes where you are. And then I think it will work really well.
If I was advising a new teacher coming to the process, and certainly if I was going to do it again, I would definitely edit down the clippings a little bit. I did do a slightly modern language version of one of the sources. And I think I would edit it a little bit even more.
I think the methods of using the clippings and then having them discuss them in their groups, that was quite a challenge to them. And we did have to slightly rethink and break it down a little bit to make it more accessible for them. But it worked, really, once we did that, it really was sort of light bulb moment for them. It sort of made sense and even one of the sources they found really difficult to begin with was actually the one that all of them really identified with and recognised and wanted to employ it as one of the key things in their videos, their stories. So that was sort of very rewarding to see them do that.
