This is a colour photograph taken in nineteen forty-four. In the foreground there is a pile of metal wreckage and a broken-down green Sherman tank. In the mid-ground there is a churned-up field before a large area of bombed white buildings, standing entirely in ruins. In the distance there is a large forested hill, with Monte Cassino Abbey on top of the peak.
