4.2 Learning while the bombs fall

The invasion has disrupted every aspect of life for Ukrainians, including education. It has also generated brave and creative ways to make sure that learning continues, both in schools and universities, in Ukraine and for displaced Ukrainians abroad. Here we focus on higher education.

In Ukraine itself, many universities still function on site, for example in the city of Dnipro, despite the shelling. Other students learn remotely. Their teachers develop new ways of teaching and supporting them, as internet connections are poor or non-existent. Students learn in hotel rooms. Many have lost family members.

Many displaced Ukrainian students are now studying outside Ukraine. The Open University is a University of Sanctuary. There are 12 scholarships for displaced students available in 2022/23. Each scholarship covers the tuition fees for a full OU undergraduate degree, over three years or longer. There are also 50 fee waivers available, which will each cover the cost of one OU Access module starting in Autumn 2022.
