I accept that many of the overseas patients treated in British hospitals do not intentionally come as health tourists. Their treatment depends on clinical need and it would be inhumane to turn anyone away to die. At the same time I understand why UK residents might feel embittered at having to pay substantial carehome fees if a relative with dementia needs nursing care. A case study was discussed this week on the Today programme. If I remember correctly, the family of a helpless woman had paid about £400,000 for her essential care in a nursing home and they were UK residents and taxpayers. It is as though dementia is not considered to be an illness and, because it does not present as an emergency, the sufferer's family is expected to pay according to their means. I cannot see the justice of this, if overseas patients with no insurance are able to receive free treatment. Recruiting a "project officer" would not seem to be the solution to recovering bad debts.
I HAVE COMPASSION FOR ALL HUMAN BEINGS REGARDLESS OF NATIONALITY. HOWEVER, THE NHS IS FLAT BROKE, IT CANNOT CARRY ON TREATING ANYONE WHO IS NOT ENTITLED TO TREATMENT, THAT IS THE REALITY. THE U.S AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES DO NOT ALLOW YOU TO CROSS THEIR THRESHOLD IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MEANS TO PAY FOR YOUR TREATMENT E.T.C . WE HAVE MANY ELDERLEY PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO SELL THEIR HOMES TO PAY FOR THEIR CARE, EVEN THOUGH MANY HAVE PAID INTO THE SYSTEM ALL THEIR LIFE. WE ALSO HAVE PATIENTS INCLUDING CHILDREN WHO ARE REFUSED LIFE SAVING TREATMENTS AND MEDICATION BECAUSE IT IS TO EXPENSIVE, EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY HAVE PAID INTO THE SYSTEM. SO IM FINDING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND WHY SOMEONE IS EMPLOYED TO PRINT OUT POINTLESS INVOICES WASTING PAPER, AS THESE DEBTS ARE NOT ENFORCED.. THE GUIDELINES NEED TO BE MADE CLEAR AND ILLEGAL ., SO WHOEVER ENTERS THIS COUNTRY UNDERSTAND THE RULES REGARDING MEDICAL TREATMENT, REGARDLESS OF CIRCUMSTANCE. IN AN IDEAL WORLD, TREATING EVERYONE WOULD BE WONDERFUL, UNFORTUNATELY THIS CANNOT CARRY ON
