myocardial infarction (MI)

A disease state that occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart is cut off. If the blood flow to the heart is not restored, that part of the heart will die, causing disability or death. It is the main cause of acute heart failure. Myocardial infarction is regularly referred to as a heart attack, although the terms are different.
