An Introduction to Geology

This figure shows two diagrams, with associated bar charts. Each bar chart shows 'size/mm' along the x axis, ranging from 8 to 0.06mm, and 'percentage of total weight' along the y axis. The first diagram shows a number of similarly sized and shaped grains. The bar chart beside it shows that all grains are between 2 and 0.25 mm. Approximately 65% of all grains are between 0.5–1mm. This demonstrates the consistency of grain size in this sediment. The second diagram shows a much greater variety in grain size and shape. The bar chart reinforces this observation, as around 30% of the grains are between 0.5–1mm, and there are grains of every size listed.
