This figure shows a network as a series of nodes, with connections linking the different nodes. There is an approximate central spine of nodes, but many of the nodes are clustered and some have many other connections and nodes ‘fanning out’ at right angles to the main spinal nodes. The detail of the diagram is less important than the contrast it offers to the usual hierarchical way of depicting organisations and their members.
