8 Problem solving strategies

There are many different ways that you can help yourself solve a problem, and get around an aspect that you find particularly tricky. In the last problem you used the following techniques, try to keep these in mind when faced with any new problem.

  • Write down what you know – the information you have, any techniques that might be helpful, and your ideas for tackling the problem.
  • Write down what you want to do or find.
  • Break the problem down into smaller steps that you can tackle one at a time.
  • Draw a diagram or use a physical model.
