This drawing shows a page from a notebook, with two headings and related columns, to illustrate Charity’s helping and hindering factors. It is also an example you can refer to when you draw up your own lists.

The left-hand column lists the helping factors: free time in the day until a second income becomes vital; determination; knowledge and enthusiasm for family history project, supportive partner and about my instructor’s positive comments.

The right-hand column lists the hindering factors: not much money; times restricted mainly to school hours – partner works irregular hours so not reliable source of evening childminding; quite shy; worried my brain has deteriorated while being out of the workplace and looking after children!; haven’t got a network of friends here; rely too much on partner.
