The centre of the figure contains a cube. Each face of the cube is divided into four squares. The left-hand vertical edge of the front face is labelled ‘Time’ and the bottom horizontal edge is labelled ‘Space’. These two edges represent axes and are each divided into two sections labelled ‘different’ and ‘same’. Thus, the top left-hand square on the face of the cube represents ‘different time and same space’ and the bottom right-hand square represents ‘same time and different space’.

The right-hand face of the cube represents the dimension of ‘Culture’, and this is also divided into two sections labelled ‘same’ and ‘different’.

Hence, the cube consists of eight small cubes, each one representing one value (same or different) of each of the three dimensions, ‘Time’, ‘Space’ and ‘Culture’.
