Figure 2 Schematic cross-section of the retina. If you look at the arrow labelled 'light' and the small inset diagram of the structure of the eye, you'll see that the path of the light is contrary to expectation; light passes through a network of nerve cells before it reaches the photoreceptor cells. Three types of interneuron contribute to the neural network; in addition to the bipolar cells mentioned in the text, which contribute to a 'straight-through' pathway for signals, there are horizontal cells and amacrine cells, which provide lateral pathways, extending out into adjacent parts of the retina
