1.2 IES Cities
A European smart city project that is already helping companies, citizens and city governments to collaborate in building their own digital city identity is IES Cities.
As you will see in the following video, they’re creating a city ecosystem of urban apps, using sensor networks and data infrastructure.

More than half of the world's population live in urban areas. And this is expected to rise over the next decade. Cities need to be sustainable, improve their services and the overall quality of life of their citizens. They need to make the best use of all their resources. And in today's smart cities, this includes using sensor networks and data infrastructure.
Thirteen partners from five different countries are working together to create a citywide ecosystem of urban apps that will use open city data enhanced by citizens using their smartphones. IES Cities is building an open innovation system where companies, citizens, and councils interact and collaborate to achieve a smarter city, a city where citizens contribute their own data and have a voice in the design of new services.
Citizens become prosumers, that is providers, producers, and users of information utilising their smartphone apps. Partners that bringing together different technological components including linked data management, service prosuming, and social data mining to create a unique platform that can make use of data in different formats. There will be up to four apps created per city exploring strategic issues such as mobility, environment, health, energy, citizenship, tourism, and navigation. These apps will be tested in their city of origin, and some will be shared with other cities. IES Cities provide citizens, municipalities, and SMEs with the tools to facilitate the use of an open technological platform across Europe.
IES Cities, a novel and practical way of building the digital identity of a city.
