This illustrates the reaction between an enzyme and a substrate. The enzyme is highly specific for its substrate and the subtrate will only be able to bind effectively if it is an exact match for a particular site on the enzyme. Binding together of the enzyme and substrate initiates the chemical reaction, the new product is formed and the enzyme is regenerated to catalyse a further reaction with a new substrate.
